THE SECURITY COUNCIL

-The Reform of the Security Council
-Peacekeeping Missions

The reform of the Security Council is one of the most controversial issues within the United Nations. Always on the UN agenda, given the obvious anachronism of its composition, the attempts to transform it into something more democratic and fair results in failures. The last “sounding” one, 4 years ago, at the 2005 World Summit. The issue is still alive, in a more “underground way”, with the work of the committees and groups of countries. But the next two years are presented as an opportunity to put the issue back on the table, since the new configuration of the Council in 2010 and 2011, where four of those considered candidates for permanent membership will be part of it, will cause, most likely, to resume the debate.
Besides the reform of the Council, the other proposed topic is also central issue: the review and reform of the peacekeeping operations.

THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

-Reproductive & Sexual Rights

2009 marked the 15th anniversary of the 1994 International Population Conference held in Cairo, which adopted a program of action, the Cairo consensus, that put the reproductive and sexual rights in the center of development. This is an opportunity to review the achievements and shortcomings, and plan for future challenges. As the then UNFPA executive director Nafis Sadik said, “Reproduction is used as a means to control women, to limit their options and to make them subordinate to men. A serious approach to reproductive health has to have this perspective in mind”.

DISARMAMENT

-Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference 2010

After thirteen years of paralysis due to differences among the great powers and the developing countries, the UN Conference on Disarmament agreed a work plan to achieve nuclear disarmament treaty. The favorable climate created by the rapprochement between Russia and Obama’s new administration opens a new phase which is expected to translate it into an effective agreement for the Review Conference 2010, taking place in May 2010. The C’MUN participants will simulate this Conference almost in "real time".

UNESCO

-The New World Information & Communication Order
The controversial report "One World, Many Voices” was released in 1980. Known as the MacBride report, because of its leading researcher name, defended a change in the structure of the media, democratizing them. It analyzed the information orientation in the mass media, its access and property. 30 years later, the media control and the production of information contents have been concentrated in fewer hands, and their power has increased, on the one hand, while on the other, we witness an explosion of content production, access and sharing of information through new technologies, which is feeding a new debate between freedom and control of this exchange. This dichotomic reality makes it necessary the debate and analysis on one of the most important areas to understand our modern societies.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION

-The Regulation of Elite Sports

A football player is worth 94 million euros? Or as worth to receive 24 millions each year to drive a F1? Are these economic models sustainable? And what about their legitimacy? Why can an athlete acquire the desired nationality so quickly? Or why do they have a different tax system? The dimension that some sports, clubs and athletes have, and their economic figures, make sport a mass phenomenon and a global business. But it also raises many questions: ethical, economic and social. We want to put this new and current issue on the table, from the perspective offered by the ILO, that is, the one of the workers, the employers and the laws regulating these relations.

THE AD HOC COMMITTEE ON THE ALLIANCE OF CIVILIZATIONS

-The Integration of Migrants

UNA-Spain continues to explore topics of debate at this special committee of the Alliance of Civilizations, which has been a pioneer in bringing it into the world of Model United Nations. With the experience of four simulations of this committee, and other parallel activities on the Alliance, by 2010, the challenge is to deal with a global issue and its several implications: the integration of migrants in host countries. The cultural issue, the clash between the culture of origin and the hosting culture sometimes creates serious conflict. Participants will have to answer questions such as who should make the "efforts" to adapt oneself, if schools should also take it into account, if there are religious customs that should not be allowed in the host country, or how should the legal concept of family and citizenship be tackled.

THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE

-The North Pole’s Future

The greenhouse effect is melting the ice of the North Pole. It’s probable that by 2040 it will be gone. But in addition to the dramatic environmental consequences, the fierce international struggle for this geopolitical area is already a reality. According to scientists, 25% of world oil resources are there. Also a new trade route waiting to be exploited. And, besides, an incomparable treasure in gas, gold, diamonds and other riches. Russia began the battle by planting its flag in the dorsal Lomonosov, turning the alarm on in all countries that are contesting rights in the area (USA, Canada, Denmark and Norway), and anticipating the possible battle of the XXIth century. This will be the topic of debate at the International Court, in an exciting edition which mixes environment, geopolitics, economics and jurisdictional rights.
