origins

In the month of January of 1963, different personalities from the cultural scene of Barcelona gathered in the clinic of the eminent urologist Antoni Puigverd to create in Spain an Association of Friends of the United Nations. They encouraged the spirit of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and they confide that the activities that they could develop that new entity that could contribute to the restablecimiento of the democratic freedoms in the country.

The first steps of the Association were orientated towards being recognised by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), a recognition that arrived in September of that year. The presentation in Barcelona took place on the 24th of October, United Nations Day.

Since then, and until the end of the dictatorial regime, “Friends of the United Nations”, besides the active task of sensibilization of the world problems, fought towards the reconquest of the lost freedoms in Spain, and reported to the international forums about the constant violation of human rights by Franco's dictatorial regime.

During all this time, the Association has never stopped by any circunstance, using all kinds of strategies and acts to reach the public. The newspapers archive keeps testimony of some of those actions, and the United Nations Association of Spain (ANUE) preserves a valuable photographic, journalistic and poster archive, where one can find notorious proofs of the vast task developed by the Association during more than fourty years.
